I love it – especially since it gets rid of those annoying drop down menus. I have played around with it several times in the past couple of weeks and found it very easy to use. Patrons should like it too, after they get over the dreaded “change”. Way to go Cari and whoever helped you.

Task #9 – Universal Class

I looked around at the site and signed up for a landscaping class just to get the feel of it. I probably won’t follow through with it but it looks like the real deal. However, when I tried to continue on with it at home, I had trouble with my email address being accepted on a different computer. There definitely are technical issues that need time to sort out.

I have told a couple of patrons about it and they seemed very interested. I envision home-school students using it also.

Task #8 Espanol LibGuide

Wow! The Spanish LibGuide is power packed. I only got 80% on the quiz but I learned from my mistakes. Thanks, Jennifer, for helping us navigate around this guide. I already have plans for using this with patrons.

Task #4 Downloading eBooks

I’m finally back at number 4. I read or at least scanned several articles in Consumer Reports. Rather than helping me decide they made my head spin with all the choices. And – I know they are not up-to-date with the latest news to come out about Kindles, etc. So, my choice is an IPad since I have one.

Steps:

1. I went to the app store and downloaded overdrive media console.

2. Hit Get books on the upper right corner of the App.

3. Added the library website.

4. Logged in to my account, searched for a book and downloaded it which was fast.

Comment: In the first 200 books I browsed, only three were available to check out. Lots of books had multiple holds so if you don’t get a book read in the time allowed, you would have to get back in the queue. Looks to me like we need lots more eBooks. I am going to see how I like reading on the IPad but have a feeling I’ll stick to paper books for now.

Extra Credit #2- A Google a Day

That was fun although I just cheated on today’s question by first guessing ‘yes’ which was wrong. So, not hard to guess ‘no’ which was right.

So I went on to look at the question for September 29 for which the answer was ‘reticule’, a purse in lieu of pockets. I knew that one being a closet regency romance reader on occasion. Shhhh – don’t tell anyone.

September 23 the question had to do with the ore most commonly used for mercury production. After searching I found that it is cinnabar Hgs. Also found out that you really want to stay away from mercury if you didn’t already know that.

A Google a day was fun but I probably won’t use it as my life is too full of the things I am already interested in,

If I passed this extra credit and I win, I would like the $100 gift certificate.

Task #7 Cloud Computing – Google Docs and Dropbox

Interesting? but — I noticed no one talked about security. Is that a problem or a worry?

I think Dropbox is what I would use especially since I have a PC at work, Mac at home and an IPAD. A good way to be able to keep track of everything, especially photos, wherever I am. Just have to make myself do it when what I really want to be doing is hiking in this beautiful fall weather.

Task #6 Helping Patrons

Yes, I did get them all right. I wasn’t really surprised but do know there is always something for me to learn about everything we have available for our patrons.

Question:

A patron comes into the wanting a copy of ‘Exile and the Kingdom’ by Albert Camus for his book group with information about the author.

a. Tell him to purchase the book at Barnes and Noble.

b. Show him how to request the book on the public computer.

c. Show him access Biography in Context and Contemporary Authors in the Research and Learning Center.

d. Both b. and c.

You know the answer, I know you do.

Task #3 Intro to MasterFile

Whew! I finally made it back after a long trip to summer at the library.

So – Best smartphones according to Consumer Reports are listed and evaluated in the 1/2011 issue.

Extra credit: Frank Zappa Stricken with Cancer in the 1/9/92 issue of Rolling Stone.

Task #5 Chilton Library

Chilton doesn’t have any info on a 1947 IH pickup which is my husband’s toy. Oh well, on the 1995 F250 Ford ranch truck. Looked at the wiring diagrams and pictures for working on lights and found it useful. Those are the kinds of things that go wrong on an old truck that is used hard.

I use Chilton’s fairly frequently to help patrons so it was good to spend some time on my own to familiarize myself with some of the features.

Yes, I know. I haven’t done #3 & #4 yet because I’m having trouble with java so will go back to them.

Discovery Task #2 Website Scavenger Hunt

That was a quick and easy way to get reacquainted with the website. I got 100!!! on the quiz but the answer kept getting changed on me. Maybe caused by the scroll on the mouse but annoying, non the less.

I use KDL for series all the time but will now remember to look at Novelist also.

Yeah, mobile resources – I am going to look at them on my ipad.
